An Overview Of Stepper Motors - ISL Products International Ltd.

A stepper motor can be described as a brushless electric motor that separates a complete rotation into several equal movements. Stepper Motors are controlled by electrical pulses sent from dedicated Stepper Motor Drivers. Stepper motor drivers are used to control stepper motors by holding fixed-step angles and controlling the rate of speed. Stepper motors can be controlled via an open, or a closed-loop system. Stepper motors are manufactured with differing step angles, most commonly 1.8 degrees, which equates to about 200 steps per revolution.

There are set, industry defined standards for stepper motor  and producers of electrical products, equipment and wiring that are used in industrial facilities. Hybrid stepper motors are one such product categorized by the NEMA, designating each with a frame size (such as; 11, 23 or 34). As an example, a NEMA 23 size motor would have a mounting face size of 2.3 inches square, and subsequently, a NEMA 17 hybrid stepper motor would have a 1.7 inch squared sized mounting surface.

Due to their wide range of applications, stepper motor produce steppers in various sizes, ranging from milliwatts, up to hundreds of watts. Maximum torque value ranges up to 15 Newton Meters, and step angles range from 1.8, to 90 degrees. Applications of the stepper motor include :

  • Due to their remote operation capabilities, stepper motors can be controlled using an input pulse.

  • Rotational motion of stepper motors can be translated to linear motion using a rack and pinion system on a linear rail.

  • They are used for numerically controlled machine tools.

  • The stepper motor is also used in X-Y plotters such as the mechanisms of 3D printers

  • Fluid control and handling is another popular application for steppers, where fluids have to be transferred in very precise amounts.

  • Stepper motors are also found in a variety of commercial, medical and military applications.

  • In certain machine tooling applications, larger more powerful stepper motors are used.

The benefits of the Stepper Motors include:

  •  Relatively simple construction and high reliability.

  • When at a standstill the motor has full torque.

  • Stepper motors are very affordable.

  • Requires little maintenance.

  • Stepper motors provide accurate starting, stopping and reversing responses.
